The Trust are looking to strengthen their expertise at a vital time as we look to secure a building in which to create a Heritage and Education Centre from which to tell the significant story of Shorncliffe Garrison.
The Trust seeks experienced people in the field of fundraising and bid writing; marketing and PR. The position of Treasurer is also available and tour Stewards are also sought.

Sponsor A Lantern
On 11th November 2018 our fourth and final Light in the Darkest Hour event took place at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery. Over 500 members of the community joined us for our ‘First and Last’ commemoration, symbolising the returning spirit of those who were never able to return home to loved ones.
Our Trustees set off to the town on Mons in Belgium, where two specially made Lanterns ‘Maple’ and ‘Tommy’ were lit from the towns eternal flame.
The lanterns were taken for a short service at the nearby St. Symphorian Cemetery, known as the ‘First and Last’ Cemetery where the first and last casualty of the Great War lie at rest.
Maple and Tommy arrived at Shorncliffe Garrison and were presented to the Garrison commander along with their own special lantern for safekeeping symbolising the returning soldier. The lanterns moved to Shorncliffe’s Military Cemetery where members of the community helped to light 500 lanterns from their flames and placed them on WW1 graves.
Following this historic commemoration, still lit, Maple and Tommy travelled to Edmonton in Canada and commenced another journey of commemoration finally returning the spirit of many Canadians home.
The Trust’s own Lanterns which were lit on each of the four Light in the Darkest Hour events are being sold to raise funds for the educational purposes of the Trust. If you would like to own one, local delivery can be arranged and a suggested donation is £10 per lantern.
We invite you to own a small part of Shorncliffe’s own history.
Maple will remain in Canada and the Trust are delighted to be guardians of new lanterns that will help support further commemorations in the future where ever they are needed. Maple and Tommy are joined by Roger, Jack and Poppy. Contact us at community@shorncliffe-trust.org.uk to discuss
